Chemnitz (dpa / sn) - Newcastle disease broke out in a pigeon population in Chemnitz.

The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut had detected the virus, the city announced on Tuesday.

Newcastle Disease is a notifiable animal disease.

The affected pigeons are in quarantine, the dovecote will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, it said.

Transmission to humans is rare.

They are only possible if there is close contact with sick animals.

The symptoms of the disease in humans are similar to those of mild flu.

In Germany, chickens and turkeys are legally required to be vaccinated, and there is a vaccination recommendation for owners of carrier pigeons.

The virus is highly contagious to bird species.

In addition to pigeons, chickens, quails, geese and wild birds can also become infected.
