Berlin (dpa) - National water polo coach Hagen Stamm is not very optimistic about his team's participation in the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

“Our chances are ten to 20 percent.

There are only three of the twelve places left, ”he said in an interview with the RBB on Tuesday.

Stamm, who is also the club president of water polo record champions Spandau 04 from Berlin, does not want to be discouraged.

The 60-year-old has been training with his team in a Bundeswehr barracks near Dortmund since the beginning of January.

The ongoing Corona situation is troubling his team, he emphasized: "We are therefore happy and excited that things are starting again internationally".

Qualification for the summer games, which was actually planned for last year, is due to begin in Rotterdam on February 14th.

Despite the pandemic, the national water polo coach believes that the Olympics will be held in Tokyo.

"The question remains whether with or without a spectator," he said.

Stamm's team has been training in North Rhine-Westphalia for a few days with the Georgian national team, against which an international match was planned on Tuesday.

A preparatory tournament with the USA, Serbia and Montenegro has to be canceled due to corona cases in the teams.

A training session with the Georgians only recently had to be broken off because a German and a Georgian player clashed, reports the national coach: "The nerves are on edge."
