Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - SPD state parliamentary group leader Thomas Kutschaty is to be the new state party chairman and at the same time the top candidate for the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2022.

The SPD party presidium agreed on this proposal, said deputy state party leader Marc Herter on Tuesday in Düsseldorf.

On Monday, the incumbent head of the SPD state association with the largest number of members, Sebastian Hartmann, announced that he was not going to run again for party chairmanship after a month-long power struggle.

The new NRW-SPD chairman is to be elected by a party congress at the beginning of March.

The party congress also decides on Kutschaty's top candidacy.

At the same time, the presidium of the NRW-SPD proposed parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich as a top candidate on the NRW state list for the federal election on September 26th.
