It was on Tuesday last week that the police in Växjö moved out to a home in central Växjö where a mentally ill man was staying.

The operation ended with the man being shot by the police.

His parents have strongly questioned that the police sent so many patrols to the scene - and that some of them were also armed with automatic weapons.

According to the mother, the 25-year-old was not dangerous but ill and in need of care.

But according to Anders Jakobsson, chief prosecutor for the Special Prosecutor's Office and responsible for the investigation of the incident, the fact that the police had so-called reinforcement weapons with them indicates that they had information that he was dangerous.

"Most dangerous to intervene against those who do not feel well"

- Among the absolutely most dangerous people to intervene against are those who do not feel well, he says to SVT Nyheter Småland.

SVT Småland has read several documents where doctors state that there is a risk that the man will be dangerous, not only for himself but also for other people, if he does not take his medication.

Therefore, he has on several occasions been judged to be in need of psychiatric compulsory care.

Robert Loeffel, spokesman for police area South, does not want to comment on the individual case.

- But in general, we have pretty good information that we get via our command center when we go to a certain address, he says to SVT Småland.

Anders Jakobsson emphasizes that all persons who were present have not yet been questioned and that this means that he may make a different assessment of the incident.

The parents' argument that there were so many police officers on site that they could have overpowered their son instead of shooting, he does not buy straight off.

Better to shoot before a situation escalates

- If there are 15 police officers on the scene and one person attacks two of them, it may be safer for one of the other police officers who are less crowded to shoot before one of the attacked police officers ends up in a situation where they shoot in self-defense, because then less risk of serious injury.

A police officer is allowed to use his service weapon when he is in an emergency situation or when so-called legal authority prevails.

When the police need to take care of a person who, due to a serious mental disorder, is obviously dangerous to someone else, is an example of just legal authority.

- Just considering that, it takes a lot for it to be obviously indefensible to shoot.

But you have to investigate and look, it may not have been justifiable.

SVT has been in contact with the man's mother who has not yet returned.
