The Völklinger Hütte World Heritage Site asked this question on the occasion of an exhibition entitled “Mon Trésor” (My Treasure): People were asked to upload pictures of their personal treasures and write down their stories.

The exhibition has not yet received any visitors because of the corona pandemic: But the personal treasures can now be admired in an online gallery, as the Völklinger Hütte announced on Monday.

The digital treasures provide very personal insights: Many have sent photos of their loved ones: the man, the woman or the child.

Others were particularly interested in their animals: There are numerous pictures of dogs, cats, horses, birds - but also of stuffed animals.

In addition, there are important references such as a suitcase full of field mail from the father who died in the war and whom the daughter only knows from letters.

Or the book with the favorite story that the parents always read to the child.

The Völklinger treasure hunt has got around.

Initially, the submissions mainly came from Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate and Luxembourg, but now they are sent from all over Germany and abroad.

"I would be happy if this gallery continues to grow and announces all the people we cannot personally welcome these days," said Ralf Beil, Director General of the Völklinger Hütte World Heritage Site.

The Völklinger Hütte is the world's only preserved ironworks from the industrial age.

It was shut down in 1986 after around 100 years and declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1994.
