Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - According to the State Health Office, 351 people in Baden-Württemberg suffered from TBE (early summer meningoencephalitis) last year.

"That is more than twice as many as in the previous year and the highest number of registered infections since 2001," said a spokeswoman for the LGA in Stuttgart of the German press agency.

The disease is transmitted by tick bites and can include meningitis.

In 2019, according to the Stuttgart Regional Council, 172 TBE diseases were reported throughout the year.

With the exception of the urban district of Heilbronn, all urban and rural districts in Baden-Württemberg are still TBE risk areas.

Vaccination is recommended for people who are outdoors and who are at risk of tick bites.

It should start early before summer because enough time has to pass between the three vaccination appointments.

In risk areas such as Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, the costs are covered by the health insurance companies.

In contrast, there are no drugs for the treatment of TBE.
