King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and Queen Silvia were vaccinated this Friday against the coronavirus.

The royal couple received the first dose of the vaccine at Stenhammar Castle, 120 km from Stockholm, according to an official announcement from the royal palace.

"The great vaccination against Covid-19 is now underway across our country," King Carl XVI Gustaf said in a statement.

“It is my hope that everyone who will have the opportunity to be vaccinated in the coming months will choose to do so.

"

Several sovereigns vaccinated

The sovereign wants the Swedish population to be able "together and as quickly as possible to go through this difficult period".

The vaccination of the king, aged 74, and his companion of 77, was "carried out on the advice of the king's doctor", according to the Court.

The Swedish royal couple is added to the list of sovereigns who have already received the first dose of the vaccine against the coronavirus.

They thus follow the Queen of England Elisabeth II and the Queen of Denmark Margrethe II.

Carl XVI Gustaf had made a noticeable foray in December, believing that his country had "failed" in its fight against Covid-19.
