Essen (dpa / lnw) - The police broke up a party with 23 men and women at the weekend in an excursion restaurant on the Baldeneysee in Essen that was actually closed due to corona.

As the police reported on Monday, the officers found 15 women and 8 men between the ages of 21 and 41 early on Sunday morning.

A police spokesman confirmed a report by the WAZ that the men also included a professional footballer from a team from the 1st Bundesliga.

He did not say who it was.

The men and women had obviously arranged to meet at a party, the police said.

"There were no distances or a nose cover worn," said the spokesman.

A glass front, usually visible to passers-by, was protected from prying eyes by a red cloth.

The officers also found empty glasses, alcoholic beverages, hookahs, snacks and a music system.

None of the celebrants lived in Essen, it said.

Most of them came from the Düsseldorf, Cologne and Stuttgart area.

All 23 received a report and then had to leave the bar.

Whether the operator of the restaurant knew about the party and why it was invited is still being determined.

"There may be a connection with a sporting event a few hours earlier," the police continued.

The party was blown after residents complained about loud music and voices.

During the first deployment around midnight, the police officers had not yet been able to discover any evidence of a big party.

The celebration was only discovered during a second mission two and a half hours later.
