Jena / Erfurt (dpa / th) - The Ministry of Science has shown itself to be open to extending the standard period of study in Thuringia once due to corona.

A ministry spokesman said on Monday that a legal regulation is required for this.

The subject of an extended standard period of study is currently being discussed among the parliamentary groups.

A decision on this can be expected in the next few weeks.

With the current practice with individual regulations, however, it is already ensured that there are no particular hardships for the students, emphasized the spokesman.

The Thuringian Student Union Conference (KTS) had previously requested an extension of the standard period of study.

Thuringia is the only federal state in which a longer standard period of study does not yet exist or has not yet been promised, explained the KTS.

Many compulsory study modules were canceled despite the switch to online teaching.

The lack of courses makes it impossible to study in the allotted time in many departments.

In addition, the workload of the students has increased significantly due to the independent development of the learning content.

The left parliamentary group supported the demand of the KTS.

The parliamentary group's spokesman for science policy, Christian Schaft, spoke out in favor of extending the standard period of study for all students in Thuringia by two semesters.

Instead of having to submit an individual application as before, a general extension should be made possible by the State of Thuringia.
