Hanover / Seevetal (dpa / lni) - The underground depot allegedly laid out by the Red Army Faction (RAF) at Seevetal dates back to the early 1980s, according to the police's initial assessment.

That said a spokeswoman for the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA) in Hanover on Monday.

"Earth bunkers weren't unusual for the RAF," she said.

A buried plastic barrel was discovered on Friday in a forest in the Harburg district south of Hamburg.

It contained chemicals and instructions for building bombs, as the "Bild" newspaper reported on Monday.

In a communication, the LKA generally did not rule out a possible reference to the RAF.

The spokeswoman said that there would be new information about the investigation into the find at Seevetal at the end of the week at the earliest.

The left-wing terrorist RAF spread fear and terror in Germany from 1970 until its self-dissolution in 1998.

34 murders of politicians, business leaders and high-ranking officials are on her account.

The central underground hiding place of the RAF with weapons, money and references to other depots was discovered in Heusenstamm near Frankfurt in autumn 1982.

Shortly thereafter, investigators arrested two terrorists at that depot and one terrorist at a depot near Hamburg.
