Hanover (dpa / lni) - Increasing right-wing populism, extremism, threatening division of society: democracy is under pressure in many places.

Lower Saxony's Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs therefore wants to award outstanding “learning locations for democratic education” - up to five per year.

The ministry announced on Monday in Hanover that learning locations that deal with democracy as well as human and children's rights and thus offer pupils and teachers experience should be recognized.

"Good ideas can serve as a source of inspiration and stimulation," said Minister of Culture Grant Hendrik Tonne.

The SPD politician emphasized that a “decisive rethink in society and schools” was necessary.

«We take these challenges very seriously.

That is why we are strengthening democracy education and education for sustainable development at learning locations and schools. "

We are looking for institutions and initiatives that focus on active participation and “lived democracy”.

Youth parliaments, civic organizations, documentation centers, memorials, adult and cultural education institutions and media centers could apply.

According to the ministry, many institutions are already taking innovative pedagogical paths to align their work more democratically and to network more closely with schools.

"We recognize this highly and are at the same time impressed by the way young people take responsibility for themselves and others through their commitment and are committed to a just society based on solidarity and a better world," said the minister.

According to the ministry, the award is intended to make the respective learning location more visible to the public and help with networking. In addition, each award-winning learning location receives, among other things, a cash prize of over 500 euros for educational offers for schools.

The application deadline is February 28, the first awards are planned for spring 2021.
