American non-profit organization (NPO) Coalition for a Safer Web has filed a lawsuit against Apple demanding to remove the Telegram messenger from the App Store.

This is stated in the press release of the organization.

The lawsuit is filed in Northern California.

It claims that Telegram did not take sufficient restrictive measures against users who spread incitements to violence and held extremist discussions after the January 6 Capitol riots.

According to NGO representatives, the messenger, by allowing the placement of such content, violates the terms of use of the App Store.

It is noted that the Coalition for a Safer Web intends to file a similar claim against Google.

The head of the organization that filed the lawsuit is the former US Ambassador to Morocco Mark Ginsberg.

He expressed the opinion that Telegram "stands out as a distributor (of hate speech -

RT

), even in comparison with Parler."

At the same time, the newspaper notes, the prospects of the claim remain unclear, since the current US legislation gives online platforms broad "immunity" from liability for posting most of the content.

We will remind that earlier Apple, Google and Amazon stopped supporting the social network Parler, popular among Trump supporters.

The service was accused of spreading a message calling for violence.

The social network intends to defend its interests in court.

In particular, Parler's management filed a lawsuit against Amazon.

The lawsuit said the termination of Parler's account was motivated by political animosity and aimed at reducing competition in the microblogging market in favor of Twitter.

Along with this, the largest American Internet platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, have blocked the accounts of US President Donald Trump.

Let us remind you that this happened after the events of January 6.

On this day, Congress was supposed to formally approve the results of the electoral vote, thus securing the victory of Joe Biden in the presidential election.

However, congressmen were forced to suspend the meeting, as Trump supporters, who do not admit his defeat in the election, rushed into the Capitol.

In the ensuing events, five people died, including one police officer.

The Democrats blamed Trump for what happened.

Against this backdrop, large tech companies have decided to limit the incumbent's ability to speak out online.

In addition to Trump himself, the restrictions also affected the president's supporters.

In particular, the leadership of Facebook banned the publication of calls for a review of the election results, promising to remove messages with slogans about the alleged fraud in the presidential elections.

As Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted, by such actions, American Internet companies demonstrate disrespect for the laws of their own country.

“Half a dozen people who have created their own technological empires do not even want to know what rights they have in their state.

They themselves determine their rights on the basis of the so-called corporate norms and do not give a penny to the constitutions of their states, ”the minister said at a press conference.

According to him, this causes serious concern.

Note that subsequently Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram pages were unblocked.

At the same time, foreign media reported that many users in the United States paid attention to other services.

According to The New York Times, after the events in the Capitol and the subsequent blocking of the accounts of Trump and his supporters, tens of millions of people downloaded Telegram and Signal messengers.

According to The Telegraph, Telegram became the second most downloaded app in the United States in a few days.

According to the newspaper, in the period from January 6 to 10, the Telegram application was downloaded in the United States about 545 thousand times, which is almost three times more than in the same period of the previous week.

As the founder of the Telegram messenger Pavel Durov said, Facebook “has a whole department” where they are looking into the reasons for the popularity of Telegram.

According to him, Telegram employees found bots that spread rumors about the messenger on social networks.

Durov added that competitors are spreading myths that Telegram is allegedly associated with Russia, and that the security and secrecy of correspondence in the messenger are in doubt.
