Wolnzach (dpa) - Despite the challenges posed by Corona, the hop farmers are satisfied with last year's harvest.

According to the Association of German Hop Growers, a total of 46,878.5 tons of hops were harvested in Germany on Monday in 2020.

That is a good 3 percent less than in the previous year.

The Hallertau in Bavaria accounted for 40,284 tonnes - here too the decrease was around three percent.

According to the association, the global hop harvest fell by around 5 percent to around 124,000 tons.

The harvest was so good that the market could be served, but not too much was left, said Association President Adi Schapfl.

"The hop quality is also a cause for satisfaction."

The hop farmers had problems last season because seasonal workers could not enter the country in the spring.

Schapfl thanked for the help received at that time.

"We are happy and grateful that so many people from the population have helped us."

This contributed significantly to the fact that the year went well.

For the current year, however, the association is “a little concerned”.

The question is again whether workers can enter the country when the seasonal work starts in April.
