Berlin (dpa) - CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt has called for a joint effort for a bourgeois government alliance after the federal election.

"The directional decision for 2021 is crystal clear: Green-led left-wing coalition against the bourgeois center in Germany," said Dobrindt of the German press agency in Berlin after the election of the new CDU chairman Armin Laschet.

"We now want to bundle the opportunities between the CDU and CSU to decide this choice of direction for us."

"Team spirit in the Union now means holding the broad center together and forming a unifying bracket through the Christian social, liberals and bourgeois conservatives," said Dobrindt.

The general election is scheduled for September 26th.

NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet prevailed on Saturday at an online party conference in a "digital preselection" against ex-Union parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz. The result of the postal vote, which is then required for legal reasons, is to be announced this Friday. In the Union, after the narrow defeat of Merz, a continuation of the split within the CDU into a camp of more conservative Merz supporters and Laschet supporters is feared. Laschet basically supports a continuation of the middle course of Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU).
