Frankenthal (dpa / lrs) - After an accumulation of coronavirus infections in the surgical department, the Frankenthal City Clinic has decided to voluntarily stop admission.

A total of 1000 employees and patients would now have to be tested twice, the city announced on Sunday evening.

The infections were noticed when a patient was tested for a transfer.

Since the weekend, four doctors, three patients and two employees have tested positive in the department.

The patients who tested positive were therefore transferred to the Covid ward.

There are also two suspected cases.

The admission freeze is to last until January 26th.

"In relation to the patients working and accommodated there, the numbers are still small, but the city clinic would like to take the necessary safety precautions in good time," said the city.

Although preventive tests were carried out regularly in the clinic, a “detailed test strategy” now had to be applied.

Urgent interventions would be made up for as soon as possible or carried out in another clinic.

Sufficient employees are available in the department concerned and for emergencies.

The incident shows "how quickly the situation can change - despite all the hygiene and control measures that are taking effect," said Mayor Martin Hebich (CDU) on Sunday.

According to the city, the infection process is currently incomprehensible.

It is apparently due to several sources.
