Berlin (dpa) - The German health authorities reported 7141 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within one day.
According to the RKI, this is the lowest number of new infections since October 20.
In addition, 214 new deaths were recorded within 24 hours, as the RKI announced.
It has not been so low since December 14th.
The number of cases recorded is usually lower on Mondays, partly because fewer tests are carried out on the weekend.
Exactly one week ago, the RKI had recorded 12,497 new infections and 343 new deaths within 24 hours.
"After a sharp increase in the number of cases at the beginning of December, a decrease during the holidays and a renewed increase in the first week of January, the number of cases seems to be stabilizing again," wrote the RKI in its management report.
The high of 1,244 new deaths was reached on Thursday.
Among the new infections registered within 24 hours, the highest value was reported on December 18, at 33,777 - but this included 3500 late reports.

According to the RKI, the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants reported within seven days (seven-day incidence) was 134.4.
Its previous high was reached on December 22nd at 197.6.
The number fluctuated after that and has been falling again for a few days.
However, the differences between the federal states are currently enormous: Thuringia has the highest incidences with 274.2 and Saxony with 244.9.
Bremen has the lowest value with 86.6.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the RKI has counted 2,040,659 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany.
The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher since many infections are not recognized.
The total number of people who died with or with a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 46,633.
The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at around 1,691,700.
According to the RKI situation report on Sunday evening, the nationwide seven-day R-value was 0.93 (previous day: 0.95).
This means that 100 infected people infect 93 other people.
The value represents the occurrence of the infection 8 to 16 days ago.
If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides.
