Level crossings, railway crossings where the road and the tracks are in the same plane, are dangerous.

This is nothing new for the Swedish Transport Administration.

Of a total of 6,500 level crossings in the country, approximately 3,500 are unattended.

Without barriers or light signals.

Approximately 6–7 people die at unattended level crossings each year.

It was at one such that a train on Sunday ran on a scooter with a trailer outside Timrå, where two teenage girls lost their lives.

Work is underway to improve safety at unattended level crossings.

-We have approximately three billion kronor in national plan earmarked for working with safety on the railway and a lot is about improving the unguarded level crossings.

There is a system where you look at those with the highest risk and fix them first, says Maria Krafft.

20-25 million

But the work is not only expensive - building a pedestrian crossing costs SEK 20-25 million - but it is slow as well.

-Many times we do not own the land and then it must be redeemed.

Then the democratic process will continue.

It can take six, seven years before we get the shovel in the ground.

Therefore, we can not just start where we want.

TT: Whose responsibility is it when accidents like this happen?

-It's ours.

Then it is a shared responsibility that you should take care of, but the ultimate responsibility is ours, Krafft answers.

"Raise the floor"

The reasons behind the accidents are mixed, but they often occur at places where there are quite rare trains, says Maria Krafft.

-Railway systems must be more robust and functional.

The goal is that we should not override the entire probability that the individual makes the right decision in those situations.

It's so devastating when something happens.

Many trains have GPS and using modern technology in places where physical investments are not a priority is a possibility.

One such possible solution that Maria Krafft hopes for is that you get a warning on your mobile phone when the train approaches.

-Then it's more about raising the floor.

It will never be as safe as with lights and barriers, but it is a way to speed up the process.

That we act from two sides.
