Athletic Bilbao achieved the surprise and crowned the Spanish Super Cup after beating Barcelona in the final 3-2, days after Real Madrid were eliminated from the semi-finals of the competition.

In the final match hosted by the city of Seville, Athletic Bilbao returned from afar, reversing their 2-1 defeat to a 3-2 victory after extending for two more periods.

Frenchman Antoine Griezmann scored for Barcelona in the 40th minute, but Bilbao quickly tied with the goal of carrying Oscar de Marcos's signature in the 42nd minute.

And Griezmann returned to hit the net again, scoring the second goal for Barcelona in the 77th minute, but Asier Villalibri scored the equalizer for the Basque team in the last minute of normal time, so the two teams ruled over an extra time of half an hour divided equally into two halves.

During extra time, Inaki Williams scored the third goal for Bilbao in the 94th minute, to lead the Basque team to regain the title, missing since 2015.

The match saw the Argentine star Lionel Messi being sent off in the final moments of the match, after receiving a red card directly for trespassing on the opponent without a ball.

The loss re-talked about Barcelona's crises in light of fluctuating results and the inability of coach Ronald Koeman to find solutions to the team's technical problems.
