Gizeh (dpa) - The German handball players still have to wait for the likely cancellation of their second World Cup game against Cape Verde.

Although nobody in the camp of the DHB selection believes that the game will take place at 6 p.m., no decision has yet been made, at least officially.

Because although the Africans currently no longer have enough players available due to a number of corona cases, they apparently want to stay in the tournament with all their might.

It looks like "that the Cape Verder Islands are trying to complement their team in such a way that they would be eligible to play again," said DHB sports director Axel Kromer.

However, it is extremely unlikely that this will be successful for the game against Germany.

The team currently has only nine players available.

In order to participate in the World Cup again, Cape Verde needs at least ten goalkeepers.

New players could travel to Egypt on Sunday at the earliest, but they would have to show a fresh and negative corona test.

After arrival, another PCR test would be due, which should also be negative in good time before kick-off in the early evening.

"And if this test doesn't come in time, they can't play," said Kromer.

Therefore, the newcomer to the World Cup wants to bet everything on Tuesday's final preliminary game against Uruguay.

By then, the nominated players and the negative tests could be available.

With a win against the South Americans, Cape Verde would even move into the main round of the tournament.
