Hamburg (dpa) - The writer Cornelia Funke has published a poetic children's book about death and dying.

The book “The Bridge Behind the Stars” is one of the company's first available new publications in 2021, as a spokeswoman for Dressler-Verlag announced.

The picture book revolves around a place that comes after death, the way there and the helpers who pick up the dying.

Funke (62) once wrote the story for a book with several stories that was published in collaboration with the Hamburg children's hospice "Sternenbrücke".

Now she has re-illustrated the story about the angel Barnabel with self-painted, large-format oil paintings.

The focus of the colorful book is the angel Barnabel, who wants to find out more about the bridge behind the stars and learn new things about himself in the process.

"The story wrote itself as if by itself. As if Barnabel were dictating it to me, the angel who is too young to accompany someone over the bridge that we call death," writes Funke in the foreword to the book.

The German author, who lives in the USA, has dedicated the book to all children “who encounter death very early” and “parents at their side”.

"Perhaps the pictures and the words can provide the children who have to cross the bridge with some companions to help them drive away the dark things."
