A few days before the inauguration of the new US President Joe Biden, the police arrested a heavily armed man near the Capitol in Washington.

The suspect carried a pistol and 500 rounds of ammunition with him on Friday, according to a police report that the AFP news agency was able to see.

According to a report by the broadcaster CNN, the man had tried to gain access to the security zone around the convention center with a fake accreditation.

Biden will be sworn in as the new US President in front of the Capitol on Wednesday.

In response to the storming of the Parliament seat by militant supporters of the elected President Donald Trump, the inauguration ceremony takes place under draconian security measures.

After the riots on January 6, there are concerns in Washington about a renewed escalation of violence.

In addition to thousands of police officers, more than 20,000 National Guards will be in Washington for Biden's inauguration.

The area around the Capitol will be cordoned off.

A high security fence has already been erected around the site.

Concrete barriers block streets in the city center.

The future US President Biden wants to implement about a dozen measures immediately after his inauguration, which also stand for the promised departure from Donald Trump's course.

Among other things, Biden will reverse the entry ban imposed by Trump on citizens from several predominantly Muslim countries on Wednesday and lead the USA back into the Paris climate agreement, said the future White House chief of staff, Ronald Klain, on Saturday.

After being sworn in, as part of the efforts to combat the corona virus, Biden will also order an obligation to wear a mask, initially for 100 days, for the places where the federal government has the say - for example in government buildings.

For January 21, Klain promised a series of directives that should help fight the corona pandemic.

On January 22nd, Biden will also instruct the government authorities to take immediate action to provide economic support to those particularly hard hit by the crisis.

More measures are to follow by February 1 to change the US's course in the pandemic, fight climate change, promote equality between ethnic groups and rebuild the economy, Klain said.

"And, President-elect Biden will show America is back and take action to regain America's place in the world."
