Istanbul (dpa) - The extreme athlete Jonas Deichmann got stuck in Turkey for the time being while trying to circumnavigate the world in a kind of triathlon due to corona-related border closings.

"It's frustrating that it doesn't go on - but not surprisingly, of course," said the adventurer of the German press agency.

In September Deichmann set out on his bike in Munich, swam 456 kilometers off the coast of Croatia and has been stranded in Turkey for over a month on the way east.

Here he is now keeping fit and thinking about how his journey can continue.

Initially, a journey to Russia was planned, but he could also change direction.

He is currently looking for a sailboat that can take him from Europe to the USA he wants to travel through.

"With my project I want to show that it can go around the world even without an engine - and I want to draw attention to climate change," said Deichmann, who actually lives in Munich.

The native of Stuttgart, who grew up in Pforzheim, turned his childhood dream into a career three years ago.

He is a freelance adventurer, lives from lectures on his tours and as a motivational speaker.

Despite the adversity, canceling the circumnavigation is not an option, he said.

"If I'm stuck for half a year, I'm just stuck."
