Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Despite the corona lockdown, the state government expects the number of pupils at the actually closed elementary schools to continue to rise.

It can be assumed that the demand for emergency care will increase continuously in the coming days, said a spokesman for the Ministry of Culture in Stuttgart of the German press agency.

In the week after the Christmas break, depending on the primary school, between 10 and 25 percent of the regular school students received emergency care.

That resulted in a query to the school authorities.

At the beginning of the year, the federal and state governments extended the lockdown to schools and daycare centers until the end of January.

An early opening of daycare centers and primary schools in Baden-Württemberg on January 18, which was initially planned, was rejected by the state government on Thursday - due to the continued high number of corona infections.

For daycare children and students in grades 1 to 7, however, there should still be the option of emergency care.

According to the Baden-Württemberg Education and Science Union (GEW), significantly more children are already using the emergency care services of primary schools and daycare centers than in the days before Christmas.

Occasionally, he received criticism from the daycare centers for the fact that parents used emergency care for their children, although they apparently had no right to it, explained GEW state manager Matthias Schneider.
