Dresden (dpa / sn) - The Saxon CDU has assured Armin Laschet of support after the election as CDU federal chairman.

“Now it is a matter of going into the election year as a team,” General Secretary Alexander Dierks told the German Press Agency on Saturday.

Laschet now has the task of leading the CDU and also bringing it together.

The federal election in 2021 will be a “very tough battle”.

The question is whether Germany will continue to be ruled by a “strong center”.

The Saxon CDU provided 30 out of 1001 delegates at the online party conference.

Dierks praised the fair competition, the three candidates were "very decent" with each other.

He was also relieved that the “unusually long” process of looking for new federal chairmen had now been completed.

Although Friedrich Merz enjoyed great approval and sympathy in the Saxon Union, according to Dierks.

North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Laschet is to succeed Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer.

The 59-year-old prevailed on Saturday at the digital CDU party convention in a runoff election against ex-Union parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz.

The decision still has to be formally confirmed by postal vote.
