Berlin (dpa / bb) - Berlin's integration senator Elke Breitenbach (left) wants more people with a migration background to work in the public sector.

A new bill provides for a quota, as the “Tagesspiegel” reported on Saturday.

Accordingly, there should be as many people with foreign roots in the administration as in the population.

Their share in the administration is currently estimated at 12 percent - in the Berlin population it is 35 percent.

According to the draft, people with a migration background should be given preference if they are equally well qualified and the quota has not yet been reached.

A spokesman confirmed the report.

“We want everyone in this city to have the same opportunities.

We do not accept structural discrimination, ”said Breitenbach of the newspaper.

"Fixed rules and clear funding in the form of a quota are necessary so that more people with a migration background are employed in the administration."

Parliament would ultimately have to decide on such a law.

The proposed goals should also apply to state companies such as the waste disposal company BSR or the transport company BVG, courts and public prosecutors.

Applicants and employees should be able to voluntarily indicate whether they have a migration background.

The requirements should also be taken into account when inviting applicants.
