Berlin (dpa) - The first public election for Germany's “Bird of the Year” is entering the hot phase.

From Monday (January 18), everyone can vote on the Internet for the polls for the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU) and the State Association for Bird Protection in Bavaria (LBV).

According to the associations, these ten birds are still in the race: city pigeon, robin, blackbird, skylark, golden plover, blue tit, kingfisher, house sparrow, lapwing and barn swallow.

In the pre-selection phase, almost 130,000 bird lovers had chosen their favorites from 307 native breeding bird species and the most important guest birds (migratory birds that fly through Germany or hibernate here but not breed here).

The species with the most votes will be named “Bird of the Year 2021” at the end of March.

The “Bird of the Year” has been elected since 1971 by a committee made up of representatives from NABU and LBV. For the 50th anniversary, the campaign is now public for the first time.
