Palestinian President Abbas sets timetable for general election

  Xinhua News Agency, Ramallah, January 15 (Reporter Xiong Sihao) Palestinian President Abbas signed a presidential decree in the West Bank city of Ramallah on the evening of the 15th to determine the timetable for holding a general election.

The general election will include the election of the Palestinian Legislative Council, the presidential election and the election of the Palestinian National Committee, the highest authority of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

  According to the presidential decree, the Palestinian Legislative Council elections, the presidential elections and the Palestinian National Council elections will be held on May 22, July 31, and August 31, respectively.

Election voting will be held in all administrative districts of Pakistan, including East Jerusalem.

  According to a Palestinian TV station, Abbas met with Hannah Nasser, chairman of the Palestinian Central Election Commission on the evening of the 15th, and then signed a presidential decree concerning the election.

  The last election of the Palestinian Legislative Council was held in 2006. The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) defeated the Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fattah) led by Abbas and won the majority of seats.

In 2007, Fatah and Hamas clashed.

Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip, Fatah actually controlled the West Bank, and Palestine fell into division.

  Recently, all Palestinian political factions have expressed their support for holding a general election in Palestine and will respect the election results.
