Scharbeutz (dpa / lno) - When tourists will be allowed to come to Schleswig-Holstein again is still completely unclear.

But the season for which the holiday resorts on the Baltic coast are currently preparing will look different than usual, said the managing director of Ostsee-Holstein Tourismus (OHT), Katja Lauritzen.

Instead of major events, many places between Travemünde and Glücksburg were planning events this year where the number of spectators could be flexibly adjusted depending on the infection situation, she said.

For example, the Baltic seaside resorts of Scharbeutz, Haffkrug, Sierksdorf, Neustadt, Pelzerhaken and Rettin are increasingly focusing on topics like hiking and cycling instead of beach parties and large concerts.

"For this we want to improve the cycle path network further," said the chairman of the Lübeck Bay Tourism Agency (TALB), André Rosinski.

Major infrastructure measures are also planned for 2021.

In Scharbeutz and Haffkrug, for example, the construction of new piers is to begin in autumn, and a new hotel is planned in Haffkrug.

In Neustadt, an old granary at the harbor is to be converted into a hostel for 300 guests.

"We hope that the restrictions on tourism will be relaxed again in the spring and that guests from Schleswig-Holsten and the neighboring districts will initially be able to return," said Rosinski.

In the Baltic Sea resort of Timmendorfer Strand, a similar rush of guests is expected as in 2020, if the travel restrictions are relaxed in spring.

"We're already well booked for the summer," said the town's tourism director, Joachim Nitz.

"We will therefore definitely continue the visitor management through the beach ticker that was introduced last year."

In order to avoid too much crowding on the beaches, Timmendorfer Strand, Niendorf, Scharbeutz, Haffkrug and other places at the Lübecker Buch 2020 installed a digital visitor control.

The project was awarded by the German Tourism Association.

When it comes to event planning, Timmendorfer Strand also focuses on larger open-air concerts with artists such as Vicky Leandros or Johannes Oerding.

"They had to be postponed in 2020 because of the pandemic and are now planned for August and September," said Nitz.

"If the situation requires it, they can also be postponed again to 2022," he added.

According to tourism director Oliver Behncke, there will be no major events on the Baltic Sea island of Fehmarn either.

"The surf festival in May on the south beach has been canceled, instead there will be a smaller event at the Green Brink," said Behncke.

Otherwise, they also rely on small event formats and open-air events.

"The planning for the tourist infrastructure continues," said Behncke.

For example, a new pier and a new hotel building with 600 beds on the south beach are planned, and an observation tower on the marina promenade is already under construction.

In Travemünde, too, people are confident for 2021.

"We look forward to when the season in Travemünde picks up speed again and our seaside resort with event concepts appropriate for the situation becomes a popular and safe destination for day and overnight guests," said the managing director of Lübeck and Travemünde Marketing GmbH, Christian Martin Lukas .

"We already gained our first experience with new formats in 2020, which we can build on in 2021," he said.
