According to Mauborgne, the situation in which Assange finds himself raises concern among representatives of human rights organizations and French citizens who are worried about the fate of this person.

In particular, referring to information from journalists, the deputy recalled that in the British maximum security prison Belmarsh, where Assange is currently being held, by the beginning of December last year, 65 out of 160 prisoners had been diagnosed with coronavirus infection.

“Some of those diagnosed with COVID-19 are in close proximity to Mr. Assange's cell.

At the same time, he himself suffers from a chronic lung disease, therefore he is at risk - the virus poses a significant threat to him, ”Mauborgne said.

In addition, Assange's entourage, according to the parliamentarian, reported about serious psychological trauma that the journalist faced during his detention.

Taking into account the current situation, Mauborgne asked Dupont-Moretti what he thinks about the prospect of providing Assange with medical assistance and paying for the appropriate treatment for the journalist, as well as about granting him political asylum in the republic.

On January 4, it was reported that the Westminster Magistrates' Court refused the US authorities to extradite Assange on the basis of fears for the defendant's mental health.

Subsequently, the court also refused to release the founder of WikiLeaks on bail, explaining that Assange's behavior in the past allegedly gives reason to believe that if released, he might try to abscond.
