Seevetal (dpa) - In a forest near Seevetal in Lower Saxony, remains of the left-wing terrorist RAF may have been found in an earth depot.

In a buried plastic barrel there were, among other things, documents from the eighties and containers with still unknown liquids, as the State Criminal Police Office of Lower Saxony (LKA) announced on Saturday.

Guns were not found.

After an initial assessment of the written material, a reference to the RAF cannot be ruled out, it said.

"The contents suggest that the earth depot must have been created decades ago."

Forest workers found the depot on Friday afternoon during tree cutting work, it said.

A mobile laboratory team from the LKA Lower Saxony checked the contents of the barrel for dangerous substances.

One thing is certain: the liquids do not pose a risk.

But which liquids it is is still unclear.

The LKA has not yet been able to provide any information about the documents found - such as the quantity or the content.

"It is evidence that is brought to the forensic institute to secure evidence," said a spokeswoman on Saturday evening.

It is possible that DNA or fingerprints are still detectable.

The forest area around the site was extensively searched for further depots.

Due to the age of the found objects, it is currently assumed that there will be no evidence of the whereabouts of the wanted ex-RAF terrorists Ernst Volker Staub, Burkhard Garweg and Daniela Klette, the LKA said.

You are also wanted for a series of twelve robberies from 1999 to 2016 - with a Europe-wide search call by the LKA Lower Saxony.

The authorities assume that the trio wanted to raise money for a life in illegality by robbery.

The Red Army Faction (RAF) fought violently against the “imperialist system” of the Federal Republic for more than 20 years.

From 1971 to 1993 terrorists killed 34 people, including representatives from business and politics such as Federal Prosecutor Siegfried Buback and employer president Hanns Martin Schleyer.
