Erfurt (dpa / th) - Many municipalities can impose fines on dog owners who leave the legacies of their four-legged friends in public places.

But municipalities have hardly imposed fines in the past few months, as a survey by the German Press Agency showed.

According to a spokeswoman for the Gera city administration, this is due to the fact that the dog owners can practically never be identified.

"Violations can usually only be prosecuted if" caught in the act, "she said.

In 2020, two pet owners were reported in Gera whose dogs are said to have done their big business in public spaces.

However, both proceedings were discontinued due to insufficient testimony.

The representatives of other city administrations made similar statements.

In 2020, the municipalities in the Free State once again generated the majority of their fines from drivers who were traveling faster than allowed.

Fines for violating corona requirements were also imposed.

However, in a comparatively smaller number.

The state police said that because of the Corona lockdown in spring, significantly fewer fines had to be issued in 2020 than in the previous year.
