Cologne (dpa / lnw) - In a fire in an apartment building in the Cologne district of Mülheim, two people with the most severe burns were found dead.

The apartment on the fourth floor was completely burned out and initially uninhabitable, said a fire department spokesman on Friday morning.

According to police, a couple lived in the apartment.

It has not yet been clarified whether the dead are the two.

A dog also died.

A total of eight people were rescued from the surrounding apartments in the building, it said.

They were not injured and were taken care of on a bus.

The fire was fought and extinguished with the help of several nozzles over two turntable ladders and the stairwell.

49 people from the fire and rescue services were deployed with 17 vehicles.

The police have opened an investigation into the cause of fire.

The reason is still completely unclear, said a spokeswoman.
