  • Politics Salvador Illa vetoed the confinements that five communities asked of him before the Catalan elections

  • Catalonia. The Government imposes the postponement of the elections until May 30

The news that Minister Salvador Illa refused to take further action until after learning if the Catalan elections are postponed has ignited the main opposition party.

The PSC candidate and head of the Health portfolio on Wednesday rejected the requests of five autonomies - three from the PP and two from the PSOE - to provide them with "tools" that allow them to confine them.

"This is not going to change in any way before Friday," he told them.

Just the key date for his candidacy, since the postponement of the Catalan elections is decided.

For the PP, "Illa cannot continue for a minute as minister, because her priority is not the pandemic" of the coronavirus and "she has her head in the elections and not in the management."

This has been assured by the PP spokesperson in Congress, Cuca Gamarra, at a press conference this Friday in La Rioja.

"It is the moment to save lives and not to scratch votes," he added.

Gamarra accuses the Government of prioritizing "the electoral interests of a minister and his party" and not those of the rest of the citizens, which are to save lives and fight the virus.

"We need a president who acts"

The spokesperson for the Popular Parliamentary Group has also accused the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, of being disappeared and has stated that "at this moment we need a government that governs and a president who acts, leads and supports the communities", with a Law on pandemics so that the autonomies can adopt the measures they need at all times.

Asturias, Andalusia, Aragon, Murcia and Castilla y León have asked to advance the curfew and the capacity to confine the population if the incidence of the coronavirus worsens.

The Government, despite the fact that Spain is in a state of alarm, does not want to allow the autonomous regions to confine themselves.

"There is a journey of measures to be taken by the autonomous communities" before confining, Illa told the health advisers on Wednesday, as this newspaper has learned.

The Executive has not approved a "plan B" that allows restricting mobility without the need for a state of alarm, as claimed by the PP.

Gamarra has once again demanded "a national strategy to fight the pandemic", because "it is not acceptable" that Spain is the only country in the EU that has not developed a law on pandemics.

Ábalos' "incapacity"

The PP also urges the Minister of Transport, José Luis Ábalos, not to shirk his responsibilities for the "chaos" in which the Barajas airport has been plunged for a week "the result of his incompetence."

And he urges him to be held accountable in Congress for his disastrous management, because Spain cannot allow Barajas to not yet function 100%.

"Ábalos cannot continue to hide his disability," Gamarra stressed.

Finally, the deputy recalled that the PP will register next week the initiative announced by Pablo Casado for the creation of an extraordinary fund of 50.00 billion that will inject liquidity into Spanish companies and recover the productive fabric, "which must be accompanied by a lowering of taxes and of the rest of economic measures proposed by the PP in Parliament ", has requested.
