Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - There are a little more doctors in Hesse.

The State Medical Association had 38,735 members at the beginning of January, in January 2020 it had been 38,125, as the chamber announced on Friday in Frankfurt.

Around three quarters of the chamber members are employed: 11,931 work as residents or employees in the outpatient sector (compared to 11,807 in the previous year) and 15,288 in inpatient care (in the previous year it was 15,065).

The high proportion of women doctors is still noticeable.

They make up the majority under the age of 55 (11,592 women, 9,471 men).

"However, the slightly increased number of members is no reason to breathe a sigh of relief," said Edgar Pinkowski, President of the Hessian Medical Association.

For years we have observed "an unstoppable decline in the number of young doctors".

The shortage of doctors is exacerbated by the fact that more and more young people shy away from settling in.

"Slightly increasing membership numbers cannot stop the worsening shortage of doctors," said the President.

The corona pandemic once again makes it clear how high the need for doctors is.
