Berlin (AP) - Berlin's governing mayor and chairman of the Prime Minister's Conference, Michael Müller (SPD), believes it is right to discuss possible tougher corona measures again on Tuesday.

"Due to the still far too high numbers of infections and the great concern about the effects of the virus mutations, it is right that we are now bringing the conference between the federal and state governments forward by a week," said Müller on Friday to the German press agency.

"It was clear from the beginning, also on the part of the federal states, that we would get together earlier if the situation required it."

Government spokesman Steffen Seibert announced on Friday that the federal-state switch scheduled for January 25 should be brought forward to Tuesday.

Müller said: "We want to consult with a panel of experts on the mutations in advance so that we have a better basis for further decisions here for Tuesday."

Even if every vaccination is a step forward, the way to normality is still a long one.

"Therefore we have to talk about further measures, which we want to coordinate in detail with each other nationwide," said Müller.

"In the private and domestic areas we have already severely restricted and expect the citizens to do a lot," said the SPD politician.

«The majority of people share these restrictions in solidarity, and I am very grateful for that.

But I still see scope for companies. "

This also includes the question of a clearer home office rule.

"I am of the opinion that companies in the current tense situation must justify why employees still have to work on site and in presence when other options are available," said Müller.

"Another building block of the conference will be how we can expand the rapid tests and self-tests, especially in the sensitive areas of health, care and education, in order to achieve more security in the long term."
