A scam on the Facebook Marketplace classifieds site lost no less than 10,300 euros to a Belgian sexagenarian.

This resident of Ganshoren was the victim of a technique known as phishing (or

phishing

in English), reports

RTL Info.

The woman posted an ad to sell a piece of furniture for 25 euros on Facebook Marketplace at the end of 2020. She was then contacted by a person who said she was interested in buying her property.

A fraudulent email

The potential buyer then offered to use the DPD Express delivery service.

"She told me that she had made the payment to DPD Express, and that they were going to pick up the parcel, and give me the money", explained the victim.

Not having a DPD Express account, she was invited by the buyer to create one via an email that the latter sent to her.

The victim then clicked on the link in the email and entered his bank details.

Money in Singapore and France

A man contacted her by phone to confirm his account.

The sexagenarian immediately noticed that the con artist was emptying his bank account.

In total, the criminals managed to extract 10,300 euros from him.

One part landed on a PayPal account in Singapore and another on a bank account in France.

The victim has filed a complaint and hopes to recover the stolen money.
