Cologne / Munich (dpa) - For the Athletes Germany Association, the harsh judgments in the Munich doping trial against the main defendant Mark S. and his helpers are proof that the people behind can no longer believe themselves to be safe in the future.

"The verdict clearly shows that those who enable and support doping can expect severe consequences," said managing director Johannes Herber on Friday.

"The sentence proves to the athletes that the judiciary is absolutely serious about prosecuting the people behind doping."

For the anti-doping law introduced in 2015, it was "a first success".

"The task now is to improve the possibilities for potential whistleblowers in order to provide the authorities with the necessary information about further doping networks," said Herber with a view to the discussed inclusion of a sport-related leniency program.

"There is no question that doping can be combated more effectively if the efforts of sport are complemented by the investigative skills of the authorities."
