Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - Around 36,000 seniors over the age of 80 have now received an appointment in Hesse for their first and second vaccinations to protect against the corona virus.

The booking inquiries by phone or via the Internet ran reliably despite the continued high demand, announced the Ministry of the Interior in Wiesbaden on Thursday.

However, waiting times must still be expected.

At the start of the booking there were massive technical problems with the booking systems due to the enormous onslaught.

In all six regional vaccination centers, the appointment bookings rose sharply, said the ministry.

In Fulda and Gießen, for example, there is already an occupancy rate of around 80 percent.

A total of around 60,000 appointments are initially available for the Hessian seniors to have a vaccination against the coronavirus.

This is how many vaccination doses will initially be made available for the first three weeks from January 19 in the six regional vaccination centers.

The vaccination should then start from Tuesday next week at the vaccination sites in Kassel, Gießen, Fulda, Frankfurt, Wiesbaden and Darmstadt.

According to the information, the important second vaccination then takes place in the same vaccination center as the first vaccination, usually about three weeks later.

Appointments for the second vaccination are always agreed when registering online or by telephone.

As soon as 60,000 men and women over 80 have made appointments, no more appointments can be booked until further notice.

Citizens who have already been successfully registered in the registration process but could not get an appointment will, according to the ministry, be saved.

The scheduling process can only start again when further vaccine deliveries are received.

In Hesse there are already vaccinations for residents and employees in old people's and nursing homes as well as staff in corona intensive care units.

The duty of regular corona tests for staff in old people's and care facilities is meanwhile being expanded in Hesse.

From January 16, all employees must be tested at least twice a week and also when starting work after an absence of more than three days, said Social Minister Kai Klose (Greens).

Since mid-December 2020, the staff in inpatient care for the elderly must be tested for the coronavirus at least once a week.

"The high number of infections and deaths in all federal states in the last few weeks and months make it clear that further protective measures are required in and for old people's and care facilities over and above the measures already decided", explained Klose.

The state of Hesse provided a weekly contingent of 500,000 rapid tests through a service provider, which the institutions could access.

In addition, there are other providers from whom tests can be obtained.

More than 1,600 new corona infections have been registered in Hessen within 24 hours.

With 1657 cases, the number of cases reported since the beginning of the pandemic rose on Thursday (as of 0.00 a.m.) to 154,500, according to data from the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin.

The number of deaths related to the virus rose by 64 to 3780. Hesse has reached 140.9 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants nationwide in the past seven days.

According to the RKI, 62,171 corona vaccinations have now been carried out in Hesse.

That was more in 1827 than the day before.

However, these figures could also include late registrations and do not reflect the number of people actually vaccinated on a day.

According to the intensive care register of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive and Emergency Medicine (Divi), 456 corona patients were last treated (as of Wednesday 12.15 p.m.) in hospitals in intensive care units.

That corresponded to 25 percent of all intensive care beds occupied.

250 Covid-19 patients were ventilated.

Throughout Hessen, 1813 of 2094 intensive care beds were occupied - also with patients with other diseases.
