Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The Rhineland-Palatinate Health Minister Sabine Bätzing-Lichtenthäler (SPD) has spoken out against such considerations in the nationwide discussion about the introduction of mandatory vaccinations for nursing and hospital staff.

It is not correct to generally speak of a low willingness to vaccinate the nursing staff, she said on Thursday in the state parliament's health committee.

In Rhineland-Palatinate there are nursing homes and hospitals in which the willingness of employees to vaccinate is 90 to 100 percent, in other hospitals it is only 40 to 50 percent.

“We are of the firm conviction that we would not get any further with mandatory vaccination for employees,” she emphasized.

It is much more important to convince and inform people, said the minister. That is why a targeted awareness campaign was launched last week to eliminate skepticism among nursing staff. The management of the respective institutions also plays a very important role. If these executives get vaccinated, it has a "magnetic effect". According to their information (as of Wednesday) 12,772 employees in old people's and nursing homes were vaccinated, plus another 9,522 employees in hospitals. A total of around 54 189 people in the highest priority group were vaccinated for the first time.
