Cologne (dpa) - In the race for the CDU federal chairmanship, North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) is feeling growing approval for himself.

"The delegates will know with whom the Union can best win the federal election," said Laschet the "Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger" (Thursday).

«That's why I'm confident about Saturday.

The approval is growing noticeably. "

At the digital CDU federal party conference on Friday and Saturday, Laschet, ex-Union parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz and foreign politician Norbert Röttgen apply for the federal chairmanship.

A runoff election and a close result are expected.

In surveys among CDU supporters, Merz had so far been ahead. The party congress delegates are only allowed to vote for the new party leader and successor to Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer. Several parliamentary group leaders had recently campaigned for Laschet.
