The House of Representatives of the US Congress by a majority vote approved a resolution to impeach incumbent President Donald Trump.

232 congressmen voted in support of this decision, 197 against. 222 representatives of the Democratic Party and 10 Republicans spoke in favor of impeachment of Trump.

The impeachment was announced under the article "incitement to mutiny."

The resolution specifies that the actions of the head of state fall under the constitutional definition of "grave crimes and misdemeanors", RIA Novosti notes.

The indictment must now be referred to the Senate, which must make the final decision.

To remove the head of state from power, it is necessary that two-thirds of the senators vote for this, that is, 67 people out of 100.

At the same time, the leader of the Republican majority in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, noted in his statement that the upper house would not have time to complete Trump's impeachment before Biden's inauguration, which will take place on January 20.

“Even if the Senate process began this week and moved quickly, there would not be a final verdict before President Trump leaves office.

This is not a decision that I made, this is a fact, ”RIA Novosti quotes him.

McConnell added that in the remaining seven days of Trump's presidency, there is no room for a "fair and serious" trial.

In this regard, he called on Congress to focus on promoting a "safe inauguration and a proper transfer of power to the future Biden administration."

At the same time, the Democrats, according to the American media, are considering the possibility of impeaching Trump after Biden took office.

In this case, Trump will lose the right to run for president in 2024.

At the same time, US President-elect Joe Biden expressed the hope that "leaders in the Senate will find a way to fulfill the obligations of impeachment provided for by the constitution, without disrupting work on other important issues for this country."

Trump himself made a video message in which he again condemned the use of violence to achieve political goals, but did not comment on the decision of the lower house in any way.

The reason for bringing charges against the American leader was a mass rally of his supporters in Washington on January 6.

Against the background of a meeting that opened in Congress to approve the results of the presidential elections held in the country, protesters supporting Trump called Joe Biden's victory illegitimate and began to clash with police officers, and later were able to break into the Capitol building and occupy the Senate hall and several offices.

The riots killed five people, including a police officer.

In the wake of the riots, several politicians, including Joe Biden himself, accused Trump of inciting violence, despite the president's urging his supporters to act peacefully and abide by the law.

Several officials have called for Trump to be removed from power before his term expires.

In particular, the Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi announced the need to take advantage of the 25th amendment to the US Constitution, which allows removing the president and transferring his powers to Vice President Mike Pence.

In turn, Pence refused to take advantage of the amendment.

After that, despite the refusal of Mike Pence, the US House of Representatives approved a resolution calling for the removal of Trump from power by this method.

Following the announcement of the congressional decision, Donald Trump became the first president in US history to be impeached twice.

In December 2019, the House of Representatives had already made an attempt to remove the incumbent from power under two articles, but in early February 2020, the Senate acquitted the American leader.

We will remind, the head of the White House was accused of abuse of power and obstruction of the work of the Congress.

According to the first accusation, Trump allegedly tried to put pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to initiate an investigation into Burisma, whose board of directors previously included Hunter Biden, son of the former vice president. The United States and Trump's rival Joe Biden.

According to the second point, Trump was accused of imposing a ban on participation in congressional hearings for current employees of the US State Department and the White House who received the corresponding summons.
