Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - A complete shutdown of the economy to contain the corona pandemic would lead to chaotic conditions in public construction projects from the point of view of Magdeburg's Lord Mayor Lutz Trümper.

It does not mean that construction projects were delayed by four to eight weeks, said the SPD politician on Wednesday.

Rather, the plans and the contracts would be obsolete.

Everything would have to be renegotiated and the construction companies would have to pause and re-coordinate upcoming orders, said Trümper.

"That would be a disaster for the construction planning."

Previously, Thuringia's Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (left) called for the entire economy to be shut down in order to finally massively reduce the number of new infections and corona deaths, which has been high for weeks.

Trümper called this a “nonsensical proposal” and warned of irreparable damage.

According to Trümper, Magdeburg made good progress with many large construction projects in the past year.

Despite the corona crisis, important appointments were kept.

Around 52 million euros in planned investments remained and are to be implemented this year.

In total, the state capital wants to spend 240 million euros on current and new construction projects.

If that succeeded, it would be a record.

"In the past few years we have never managed to use these sums in a cash-effective way," Trümper emphasized.

According to him, 60 million euros should flow into the new building and renovation of schools.

In addition, for example, the renovation of the Hypar shell (construction cost 2021: 8 million euros) and the town hall (7 million euros) in the city park, the monastery of Our Lady (3.8 million euros) and the Gruson greenhouses are continuing.
