Potsdam (dpa / bb) - 28,584 signatures have been received from the people's initiative “Verkehrswende Brandenburg now!”

handed over to the President of the State Parliament Ulrike Liedtke in Potsdam.

The initiators brought the four white moving boxes with cargo bikes and trailers to the state parliament on Wednesday.

"This number shows not only the desire for a climate-friendly and social transport turnaround, but also the dissatisfaction with the existing transport policy", says initiator Fritz Viertel, chairman of the ecological transport club VCD Brandenburg.

With the initiative, the alliance of transport and environmental associations, trade unions and students is calling, among other things, to reliably connect rural areas to local public transport, more space in buses and trains, a network of cycle expressways and safe cycle and footpaths and the relocation of the Freight transport by rail.

20,000 signatures are required for a successful popular initiative.

Then the state parliament has to deal with it.

If the latter rejects the demands, a referendum can take place in a second stage, for which 80,000 signatures are required.
