The Mexican government on Tuesday released regulations surrounding the production and marketing of medical marijuana, more than three years after the law was passed by Congress.

"The objective of these regulations is to frame the control, promotion and monitoring of raw materials, pharmacological derivatives and drugs derived from cannabis, for production, research and cultivation for therapeutic purposes", indicates the document published in

the Official Journal

.

This, which comes into force on Wednesday, regulates the sowing of seeds for research as well as the manufacture and sale of cannabis-based drugs under the supervision of the Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) .

It also provides for the import and export of raw materials, derivatives and cannabis-based drugs.

Possession of cannabis limited to 5 grams

The Mexican Congress approved in April 2017, under the government of former President Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018), the use of cannabis for therapeutic purposes.

The Chamber of Deputies is due to consider a bill in February authorizing the consumption of marijuana for recreational purposes, after its adoption in mid-November 2020 by the Senate.

So far, possession of marijuana has been limited to five grams per person.

The bill wants to increase it to 28 grams while allowing home cultivation of up to eight plants.
