Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - The European Union will provide Saxony-Anhalt with around 1.88 billion euros to fund structural projects over the next seven years.

The state chancellery announced on Wednesday that the state could invest around 120 euros annually for each resident.

This means that the country will get around 8 percent less from the EU structural funds ERDF and ESF from 2021 to 2027.

At the beginning of last year, however, the state government expected that only a good 1 billion euros would be available.

The EU funds are intended to finance important infrastructure projects such as roads or bridges.

With this, the European Union wants to bring the various stages of infrastructure development in the member states closer together.

So far, the states have been able to finance such projects to 80 percent from the EU pots, the remaining 20 percent usually had to come from the state, the municipality or the economy.

In future, only 60 percent of the costs are to be financed from the EU funds.

European Minister Rainer Robra (CDU) spoke of a “very good result for Saxony-Anhalt” in terms of the funding volume.

"We would have wished for more in the co-financing," said Robra.

The full co-financing of EU funds by the state, the municipalities and the economy is a great challenge, said the state chancellery.
