Hanover (dpa / lni) - From the point of view of the state government, the food retail trade should market regional products fairly.

In this context, the federal government must quickly implement a draft law against unfair trade practices, demanded Agriculture Minister Barbara Otte-Kinast and Economics Minister Bernd Althusmann (both CDU) on Wednesday after a video conference with more than 60 top representatives from the food trade and agriculture in Hanover.

"Tough price negotiations and the fight for the last cent are very often at the expense of our farmers," said Althusmann.

The background to the conversation was the farmer protests in recent months in front of the central stores of the food chains.

Farmers find themselves in dire straits because of low producer prices and accuse trading groups of abusing their market power.

85 percent of the food retail trade in Germany is controlled by the four large groups Edeka, Rewe, Aldi and the Schwarz Group (Lidl, Kaufland).

The farmers are almost helpless at this market power, said Althusmann.
