Hanover / Bielefeld (dpa) - Deutsche Bahn is starting the planning dialogue today for the expansion of the ICE railway line Hanover-Bielefeld.

Municipalities and residents should be involved in the search for a suitable route for expanding the busy railway line at an early stage.

Because of the corona epidemic, the dialogue event is taking place online.

The railway line is to be expanded to four tracks and for a speed of 300 km / h in order to connect the Rhine / Ruhr area with Berlin more quickly and to enable better regional traffic between Westphalia and Lower Saxony.

Lower Saxony's Economics Minister Bernd Althusmann (CDU), NRW State Secretary for Transport Hendrik Schulte, Federal Transport State Secretary Enak Ferlemann (CDU), top Deutsche Bahn representatives from North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony as well as mayors and district administrators of the region are involved in the dialogue.

The planning consultation is based on five model variants of how the expansion could look.

Points of contention will be whether the new tracks will be built closer to or further away from the existing route, whether longer tunnel sections protect residents from noise and at what cost what travel time gain is achieved.

In order to better link the metropolitan areas with fast transfer connections in the future Germany cycle, the travel time between Hanover and Bielefeld is to be reduced from currently 48 to 31 minutes.
