Hamburg's Medical Chamber President Pedram Emami has joined the debate about compulsory corona vaccination in medical facilities and criticized it as superfluous.

"We still don't know for sure whether people who have been vaccinated will still pass the virus on," he said on Wednesday in the Hanseatic city.

The first data on this are expected in the coming weeks.

"Until then, it will be a virtual discussion that will only bring more unrest into an already heated mood." Emami demanded that we concentrate on the essentials and vaccinate people quickly in the intended order.

However, if it later turns out that vaccinated people cannot pass the virus on, one could discuss compulsory vaccination for employees in risk areas.

After all, it's not just about your own well-being, but above all about the well-being of others, Emami emphasized.

So much sense of responsibility must be expected from the medical staff.

Vaccination rate in Hamburg is increasing

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) (as of Tuesday), 15,980 people in Hamburg have been given the first dose of vaccine against the novel corona virus.

That is 1707 more than the day before.

The vaccination rate (vaccinated per 1000 inhabitants) rose to 8.7 and is still below the national average of 9.7.

The Hanseatic city ranks 10th among the federal states.

At the beginning of the week there was confusion about a change in the vaccination strategy in Hamburg.

On Monday, the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians spoke to the broadcaster Hamburg 1 Fernsehen about a change of strategy, according to which the second dose required for complete vaccination protection would no longer be kept in stock as a precaution so that more vaccine would be available at short notice.

KV Hamburg operates the vaccination center in the exhibition halls on behalf of the city.

The health authority contradicted this statement on Tuesday.

It is true that with the plan to complete the vaccination of the residents of the care facilities by mid-February, the stock of vaccines will decrease, spokesman Martin Helfrich told the German press agency on Tuesday.

“However, it is ensured that the second dose can also be vaccinated to everyone who has already received the first.” At the moment, the deliveries are still too irregular.

"It would be annoying if we couldn't keep a vaccination appointment due to a pending delivery."
