Halle (Westphalia) (dpa / lnw) - The corona vaccine from the Mainz-based company Biontech and its US partner Pfizer will soon also be produced in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The US pharmaceutical company Baxter has received a corresponding order for its plant in Halle in Westphalia, said the head of personnel at the plant, Jürgen Fleischer, on Wednesday when asked.

The start of production is expected to be in March.

In Halle, Baxter primarily produces cancer drugs.

A production line will be converted to the production of vaccines.

"We are making the final preparations," said Fleischer.

The conversion of production will be controlled by the district government.

Fleischer did not name the number of vaccination doses to be produced in Halle.

A Biontech spokeswoman also gave no information.

Around 800 people are employed in the factory in Halle.

Another corona vaccine is to be produced there in the future.

The Baxter headquarters in the USA announced on Monday that a vaccine developed by the US company Novavax would be manufactured in Halle.

But this vaccine has not yet been approved, said Fleischer.

Biontech and Pfizer want to produce two billion doses of their corona vaccine this year under certain conditions.

This emerges from Biontech's documents to the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

So far, the companies had targeted 1.3 billion cans.

Conditions for the higher production are improvements and enlargements at the previous locations as well as further suppliers and contractual partners for the production, it said.
