Worms (dpa / lrs) - The city of Worms is introducing a 15-kilometer rule due to the high number of corona infections.

The municipality is limiting the range of movement of its citizens for tourist purposes, said Mayor Adolf Kessel (CDU) on Tuesday.

The city originally wanted to do without it, but the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Health insists on the regulation.

In addition, in Worms there is again a mask requirement in the pedestrian zone.

That provision expired on December 20th.

The city administration emphasized that the 15-kilometer rule is aimed solely at avoiding day tourism.

Now you are not allowed to move further than 15 kilometers from the city area for excursions.

Day tourists are also not allowed to come to Worms if they live more than 15 kilometers away.

"We very much regret having to make the general decree even more restrictive," said Kessel.

However, the city's hands are tied due to the continuing increase in the corona numbers.

The measures, which also include a nocturnal exit restriction, initially apply until January 31.

In Worms there was a seven-day incidence of 322.0 on Monday - that is how many new infections per 100,000 inhabitants there were in the past seven days.

That is more than twice as high as the value for the whole of Rhineland-Palatinate (139.3).
